Steven M. Bierig
Steven M. Bierig is engaged in the practice of arbitration and mediation specializing in labor and employment disputes on a national basis. He has received appointments for cases both on an Ad Hoc basis as well as being a member of various arbitration and mediation panels. Those panels include the United States Postal Service and the various unions that represent its employees, the City of Chicago and its constituent unions, the Chicago Board of Education and the Chicago Teachers Union, the Federal Aviation Administration and NATCA and the Internal Revenue Service and the National Treasury Employees Union. He serves on the panel of arbitrators that resolve jurisdictional disputes at the Soldier Field and McCormick Place Expansion Projects. He is also a contract mediator for the EEOC as well as the regular mediator of medical disputes between the City ofChicago and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 7. Mr. Bierig is a referee for the National Railroad Adjustment Board and is affiliated with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the American Arbitration Association and the Illinois Department of Labor. He serves on the roster of arbitrators, mediators, and fact-finders for theIllinoisState and Educational Labor Relations Boards. He is a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators.
Mr. Bierig has served as an adjunct faculty member at IIT/Chicago Kent College of Law and is currently an instructor at the School of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He has written numerous articles on various labor and employment issues. He is a co-author of the chapter on Public Employees in IICLE’s Labor Law Handbook, a Chapter Editor and Author for both How Arbitration Works and Discipline and Discharge in Arbitration, both published by BNA Books.
Mr. Bierig received his J.D. with high honors from IIT/Chicago Kent College of Law in 1984. Prior to becoming a full time neutral, Mr. Bierig was engaged in the practice of labor law on the management side. During that time, he served as a Senior Attorney Supervisor at the City of Chicago Law Department and worked in the Labor and Employment Department at the Chicago Office of Katten Muchin & Zavis.
