Jessica Block

A partner at Block & Roos, LLP, established in 2004, Jessica Block has been in private practice in Massachusetts for 30 years in a variety of professional settings and is an attorney, mediator and arbitrator.  In addition to a commercial practice, she represents both individual professionals and businesses in employment-related matters, including discrimination and retaliation, FMLA, disability insurance claims under ERISA, executive compensation, including expatriate contracts, wages and hours act issues, commission disputes, internal grievance proceedings and appeals involving professional conduct, change of control agreements and severance issues, restrictive covenants, and employee terminations that implicate public policy considerations.   She advises lawyers, college professors and medical professionals on matters of professional responsibility.


Ms. Block is a member of the Commercial and Employment Tribunals of the American Arbitration Association, a member of the panel of neutrals at the Massachusetts Fee Arbitration Board and a member of the Massachusetts Collaborative Law Council.  For the past three years, she hasauthored Arbitration of Employment and Labor Disputes, The Alternative Dispute Resolution Guide  (Roth/Wulff/Cooper), Thomson/West (Chapter 17).  She has acted as a neutral on a variety of matters, including age and disability discrimination claims, executive compensation and commission disputes, disputes over restrictive covenants, insurance premium disputes with bad faith claims-handling counterclaims, FMLA, and shareholder disputes.  She volunteered as a mediator at the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination and now is involved a pilot project at the Commission to use collaborative law to resolve pending cases.  She has help to educate MCAD investigators and legal staff on collaborative law.  She is a frequent presenter at Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education on issues ranging from calculating business damages to privacy and confidentiality concerns in litigation.


This year, Ms. Block will co-chair the MCLE’s Fourth Annual ADR Conference and, with her co-chair, created a program focusing on ADR and neuroscience, psychology and game theory.  She is a long-time member of the Board of Editors of the Massachusetts Law Review and of the Women’s Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association and Boston Bar Association.   In her free time, Ms. Block volunteers for the Boston Debate League and this year will serve as a mentor for a high school debate team.


Ms. Block is a graduate of Stony Brook University (SUNY) where she received a B.A. She obtained her M.A. in English literature at the University of Toronto and J.D. at Northeastern University School of Law.
